The danger of dreams for the dreamy type

July 24, 2017

It can happen everywhere. At any randomn place, at any randomn time. Sometimes, I doze off into a sort stare phase in which my mind zones out to a whole other world. Probably my dreamworld. My imagination. Whatever you want to call it. I can spend a significant amount of time thinking about ideas, my career, or just life in general.

I know, I’m not telling you anything new in particular. We all know how to use our imagination in some form, but I’ve noticed that some people just do this more often than others.

This is probably why some people have called me ‘a dreamer’ before.

And to be honest, I’m not even going to defend myself against that term. Because I agree. I do think I am somewhat of a dreamer. But I also believe this is a beautifull thing. You get to create a vivid inner world that is unique. Many creativity rolls from this ‘dreamstate’.

However, I also noticed that it’s very easy for dreams to stay dreams. If you're a dreamer, sometimes it feels like you have been so busy with that dream (because in your head, u've been thinking about it a million times) while in reality nothing much has actually changed. Therefore you can easily fall into illusionary thinking.

Im writing this because I want to empower those who secretly also feel that they recognize this pattern. Remember, it’s OK . It doesn’t mean that it’s impossible for dreamers to achieve something, it’s just something that you can work on. Once you are conscious of it, you can change it. It just requires AWARENESS & ACTION.  2 Keywords I want address.

Visualizing your dreamlife is a start, but definitely not the key to opening the door towards your dream life.

How do you know if you are a dreamer?  I made up a quick test for you to find out:

-Do people often catch you staring / daydreaming?
-Do you visualize a lot?
-Have you ever felt like your dreams are so big that, sometimes, you don’t really know how to go about it?
-Have you every caught yourself staring and actually not really knowing what you were thinking about?
-Do you know what it means to ‘live inside your head’?
-Have you ever wondered how it is that your dreams are not really turning into reality like you want them to?
-Do you sometimes like to just sit by yourself and do nothing but think about your ideas and plans?

If your answers on most questions are ‘YES’ , you are definitly a dreamer. Welcome to the club. Now that you have the awareness, let’s translate this into the most important thing > ACTION

‘If your dreams don’t scare you – they are not big enough’ . TRUE, but sometimes, dreams may feel so big that it’s overwhelming. Big dreams can appear as super high mountains which look too steep to climb. & This results in the paralyzing effect : You end up doing nothing and the dream remains just a beautifull thought.  But that is not what we want.

So my advice for you : work with steps & checkpoints! Start seeing it as a game. In order to get a level up, you have to finish the one before first.

The most important thing for a dreamer to do: write your dreams down. Literally take the dream out of your head and make it a physical thing. Once you have done this, divide the dream into feasible steps that you can execute per week / per day or even per hour.

In order to know whether this is working and you’re not remaining in the dreamstate, work with checkpoints. Reflect every month / or week or day to see whether you actually executed on the steps. If you didn’t, ask yourself, why? What went wrong and what triggered me not to execute on the steps that I wrote down for myself?

Remember, DISTRACTION is also a form of action, but not the one that is going to help you in achieving your goals. Be aware of this. Be aware to who or what you give your time to.

It may not work perfectly the first time. But I can assure you that the process of writing and dividing the work of your dreams into steps is by itself going to help you execute them!

I really believe that dreamers are magnificent. Let’s allow ourselves to dream freely about whatever we want, but let us not forget to share and execute on the great, creative ideas that arise from this!
